Konor was born shortly before the full-scale invasion began. He lived in Dnipro with Anton and Tetiana, and grew closest to Anton. The parrot would sit on his shoulder, dance while he cooked, and even learned to speak in his voice. Among his first words were "Hello" and "Glory to Ukraine".In 2025 Anton was killed in Dnipro by a Russian drone strike. After his death Konor seemed to lose a part of himself: he stopped eating properly, began pulling out his own feathers, lost weight and almost stopped speaking. When he did speak, it was Anton’s voice, with Anton’s intonations.Konor was taken to Nataliia Popova’s shelter, where he was cared for alongside other animals rescued from the war. After veterinary treatment he was passed on to the Free Wings centre near Lviv. A new aviary was waiting for him there, along with care and the company of other rescued birds. At first Konor was badly frightened, aggressive and wary. But calm, care and the presence of another parrot gradually helped him recover. His feathers began to grow back.Konor’s story is not only a story about trauma. It is a story about how recovery is possible even after loss, fear and war. Sometimes all it takes is a safe place, time, and someone who will not turn away. These are exactly the places Free Wings creates, for birds harmed by war, by human cruelty or by other dangers. Here they get the chance to live again.
